Huddersfield grew as a woollen mill town: workers who settled in the Colne valley beside the mills were housed in terraces, while mill owners and wealthy families moved to Edgerton, about a mile from the centre. There the Thornhill Estate Act allowed only villas and banned trade of any kind, leaving a leafy Victorian suburb of large detached houses, with late 19th-century terraces to the south and early 20th-century semis close by. Up the valleys, villages such as Golcar keep 1840s weavers' cottages, three of which now house the Colne Valley Museum.

The University of Huddersfield is the town's largest employer, and three further colleges add to the student population.
