Kirkby was mostly farmland until the Second World War, when the ROF Kirkby munitions factory was built there. In 1947 Liverpool Corporation bought 4,070 acres from the Earl of Sefton to rehouse families from war-damaged and slum housing, and Kirkby became Merseyside's largest overspill estate, with the first Southdene houses finished in 1952 and the 10,000th in 1961.
