Homes in Kirkby
Kirkby was mostly farmland until the Second World War, when the ROF Kirkby munitions factory was built there. In 1947 Liverpool Corporation bought 4,070 acres from the Earl of Sefton to rehouse families from war-damaged and slum housing, and Kirkby became Merseyside's largest overspill estate, with the first Southdene houses finished in 1952 and the 10,000th in 1961. The town has four districts, Southdene, Westvale, Northwood and Tower Hill, and more than 800 new homes are being built south of Cherryfield Drive.
According to the 2021 Census, 60% of households in Knowsley own their home (29% outright and 32% with a mortgage), 15% rent privately and 25% rent from a council or housing association. The most common type of home is semi-detached houses (43% of households), followed by terraced houses (32%).
The wartime factory site became Kirkby Industrial Estate, one of England's largest, which employed over 26,000 people at its 1971 peak and is still a major employer. Since buying the town centre in 2019, Knowsley Council has delivered new shops including a Morrisons, a travel hub in the old multi-storey car park and a post-16 education centre, and a government-funded regeneration plan was approved in 2026. Liverpool FC moved its first-team training centre to the town in 2020.
Kirkby and Headbolt Lane stations have frequent trains to Liverpool, Headbolt Lane also has an hourly service to Wigan, Manchester and Blackburn, and the M57 runs alongside the town with the M58 just to the north.
