Leyland's parish church dates from around 1200, but the town is best known for the Lancashire Steam Motor Company, founded here in 1896 by the Sumner and Spurrier families, which became Leyland Motors. Leyland was part of the Central Lancashire New Town designated in 1970, whose development corporation built new communities such as Moss Side, and about 65% of the town's homes date from the 1970s. Most are semi-detached or detached houses or bungalows, spread across the centre and areas such as Broadfield, Worden Park, Turpin Green and the Wade Hall estate.
