Welwyn Garden City was founded by Sir Ebenezer Howard in 1920, after his earlier experiment at Letchworth, with Louis de Soissons as architect and town planner. It is laid out along tree-lined boulevards around a neo-Georgian centre and Parkway, a central mall almost a mile long, and in 1948 it was also designated a New Town, making it uniquely both a garden city and a new town.
