Homes in Worksop
Worksop was a small market and malting town until the Chesterfield Canal arrived in 1777 and the railway in 1849, and its population grew from 3,391 in 1801 to 16,455 by 1900. Coal found beneath the town was worked at Shireoaks, Steetley and Manton collieries, and by 1900 most of the workforce was in mining. Kilton, in the north-east of the town, is a large suburb of post-war housing developments, some of them council estates.
