Accrington was thought of as little more than a large village until around 1830, then cotton, textile machinery and coal took its population from 3,266 in 1811 to a peak of 45,029 in 1911. Mill owners built mansions on the outskirts while their workers crowded into the centre, and nearby Huncoat made the iron-hard NORI engineering bricks used in mills across the north and in the Empire State Building.
