Bridlington began as two settlements, the Old Town about a mile inland and the Quay by the harbour, which grew into a resort after 1805 and was joined to the Old Town once the railway station opened between them in 1846. The Old Town keeps much of its Georgian and Victorian character, with large period houses on the High Street that were once favoured by sea captains and merchants. South of the harbour, the Hilderthorpe conservation area protects almost 300 houses built from about 1900 in styles from Arts and Crafts to Art Deco.
