Grimsby grew around its docks, which by the 1950s made it the busiest fishing port in the world, and Freeman Street near the docks once rivalled the town centre for shopping. Council-built estates include Nunsthorpe, with over 2,400 homes, split between pre-war Old Nunsthorpe and post-war New Nunsthorpe, with some now privately owned through Right to Buy. Post-war building also turned the village of Scartho into an outer suburb, and estates now link Grimsby with the resort town of Cleethorpes.
