Cwmbran was designated in 1949 as the first new town in Wales, on 3,160 acres around the existing villages of Cwmbran, Pontnewydd and Croesyceiliog, and planners proposed seven residential areas, each with its own neighbourhood centre. The Development Corporation was wound up in 1988, and near the centre, areas such as Northville mix low-rise, traditionally built houses and flats with large concrete-framed blocks of flats.
