Ebbw Vale was transformed from a quiet upland spot by the ironworks that opened in 1778 and the coal mines that followed, and the town now runs in an almost unbroken street plan for about three miles from Beaufort in the north to Cwm in the south, with significant areas of modern housing to the north and south. Since 2003 the former steelworks site, known as The Works, has been redeveloped with a hospital, a learning campus and new homes.
