Newton Mearns grew from a village into a commuter suburb of Glasgow from the early 20th century, with around 6,000 houses added by private builders and the council in the 1930s and building starting again in earnest in the 1950s. Eaglesham was laid out as a planned village from 1769 around a stretch of common land called the Orry, and in 1960 it became the first outstanding conservation area in Britain.
