Kettering grew in the 19th century on the boot and shoe industry, when large homes on the Headlands and Rockingham Road were built for factory owners and terraced streets housed the workers. Its biggest new neighbourhood is Hanwood Park, the East Kettering urban extension, which gained outline permission in 2010 for up to 5,500 homes along with a secondary school and up to four primary schools.
