Portadown grew on linen after a market was set up in 1762, helped by the River Bann, the Newry Canal and later the railway, which made it the 'hub of the North'. In the 1950s Portadown Borough Council and the Northern Ireland Housing Trust built estates such as Killicomaine, begun in 1954. From 1965 Portadown was to be joined with Lurgan in the new city of Craigavon, but about half of what was planned was never built.
