Redditch was designated a new town on 10 April 1964 and grew from 32,000 people to over 70,000 by 1984, as estates such as Church Hill, Matchborough, Winyates, Greenlands and Woodrow were built for overspill from Birmingham. Church Hill, begun in 1975, follows a Radburn-style layout of cul-de-sacs, older former villages such as Webheath and Headless Cross lie to the west, and Abbeydale has 1950s estates, some built using Wimpey no-fines concrete.
