In May 1957 Thetford agreed to take London overspill, with the London County Council building homes for families moving from the capital. The first estate, Barnham Cross Common, opened in April 1959, Redcastle Furze followed after 1970 with prefabricated 'Anglia Houses', and Abbey Farm, built from 1967 to 1971 along Canterbury Way, mixes maisonette blocks with narrow-frontage houses. Kingsfleet, an extension of 5,000 homes planned over 30 years, is the next phase of growth.
