Atherstone grew as a long ribbon along Watling Street, now Long Street, where medieval burgage plots are fronted by town houses mostly of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many Georgian in style. The town only spread beyond these plots in the 19th century, and the streets south of Station Street and South Street are mainly two-storey terraced houses of the late 19th century; the centre has been a conservation area since November 1995.
