Coalville grew from open waste land after Whitwick Colliery was sunk in the 1820s and Snibston Colliery opened in 1833. Its central core is streets of similar terraced houses built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with detached housing concentrated on London Road and Forest Road, and the wider urban area takes in older villages such as Whitwick and Hugglescote. Broom Leys was officially named as a suburb in 2014.
