Loughborough grew as an industrial town in the late 19th century, when its population more than doubled in a decade and firms such as the Taylor bell foundry and the Falcon works, later Brush, were set up. Twentieth-century suburbs followed: Shelthorpe from 1929, and Thorpe Acre, where 100 homes of no-fines concrete were built for Brush workers in the 1950s before a larger estate in the 1960s and 1970s. Grange Park, south of Shelthorpe, has been built since 2006.
