Beeston's Victorian and Edwardian heart grew from 1878 on estates laid out by land societies, and St John's Grove and Cottage Grove are now conservation areas. South of the railway, Beeston Rylands filled with estates for workers at Ericsson and Boots, including 900 houses built on the Cliftonside estate between 1934 and 1939, followed after the war by council houses and flats, then private houses and bungalows. Mid-20th-century suburbs joined Beeston to Chilwell, Wollaton and Lenton Abbey.
