Hinckley was built on hosiery, and in the early 19th century only Leicester made more stockings; the town museum occupies a row of 17th-century timber-framed framework knitters' cottages. The town saw new housing developments in the 1950s, 1960s and 1990s, and its suburbs include Hollycroft, Middlefield, Stoneygate and Wykin, while Burbage, Sketchley and Lash Hill sit on the far side of the railway line.
