Taunton grew up around its castle and market on the River Tone and had spread into neighbouring Bishop's Hull and Wilton by the 1830s, with its borough boundaries widened again several times between 1887 and 1966. The biggest recent growth has been at Monkton Heathfield on the north-eastern edge, where 1,291 homes were completed between 2012 and 2021, and in 2023 Comeytrowe and Staplegrove were folded into a new Taunton parish.
