Andover, recorded as Andeferas in 955, became a stop for stagecoaches in the 18th century, and in the 1950s it was approached to become an overspill town for London. The first new council houses were ready by 1954, a 1961 plan provided for 9,000 new homes, and by 1981 the population had reached 51,000. Since the 2000s developers have extended the town with estates such as Saxon Fields, Augusta Park, Picket Twenty and, more recently, Peake Way.
