Eastleigh was a group of villages until the London and South Western Railway developed it as a railway town, starting with a station near the village of Barton, first named Bishopstoke Junction, and moving its carriage works here from Nine Elms in 1891 and its locomotive works in 1909. In Chandler's Ford, homes went up at King's Court, Merdon and Hiltingbury in the 1920s and later across Scantabout, Spring Hill and Oakmount, while Hedge End, once a strawberry-growing village, expanded rapidly with new residential areas after the M27 arrived.
