Gosport sits on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour, and much of its history is naval: the Royal Clarence victualling yard opened in 1828 and closed in 1992, and Haslar was a Royal Naval Hospital from 1753 until 2007. Both sites have since been redeveloped for housing. At Rowner, an estate of a thousand flats, maisonettes and houses opened for service families in 1966 and was largely replaced with more modern homes under the Rowner Renewal Scheme in the early 21st century.
