Basingstoke was a small market town, with the Top of Town as its historic heart, until it was expanded rapidly in the late 1960s to take London overspill. Farmland around it was turned into planned estates designed as almost self-contained communities, including Popley, Oakridge, Winklebury, South Ham, Kempshott, Brighton Hill, Lychpit and Chineham, and Popley, Hatch Warren and Beggarwood saw further rapid building in the mid to late 2000s.
