Walton's old village centre lies to the north, with later building on the southern manors around the railway station, and its population more than quadrupled between 1851 and 1911 as the railway shaped the town. The Ashley Park estate was broken up in 1920, the private Burwood Park estate in neighbouring Hersham was sold in plots from 1927, and the Heart of Walton redevelopment added 279 one and two-bedroom apartments to the town centre.
